Summary:Regulation (EU) 2022/2400 - adopted by the co-legislators on 23 November 2022 - aimed at tightening the limits of the so-called Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in waste. This is a text with EEA relevance. Further information:Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are chemicals with toxic properties that remain in the environment for a very long time, accumulate in food chains and can harm human health and the environment. Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 implements the commitments of the EU under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants - also known as Stockholm Convention - and under the Protocol to the 1979 Convention on the Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution on Persistent Organic Pollutants - also known as the POPs Protocol. This Regulation amends the annexes of that Regulation by introducing stringent limits for a number of substances or groups of substances in waste. The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 28 October 2021, in the framework of the Circular Economy Action Plan. The Council of the European Union formally endorsed its general approach on 17 March 2022. The plenary of the European Parliament adopted a negotiating position on 9 May. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text for this file was reached on 20 June. This was formally endorsed by the Parliament on 4 October and by the Council on 24 October. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 23 November 2022 and published in the Official Journal on 7 December 2022. |
