Riot police prevented thousands of opposition protesters from marching into central Kiev on the 24 August 2011, casting a shadow over Ukraine’s 20th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union.

The protesters were attempting to defy a court ruling announced on the 23 August 2011 that banned opposition rallies from being held in central Kiev during the celebrations.

Thousands of people protested against the trial and detention of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
