Report of a rally held in the city of Yekaterinburg in Russia’s Urals on the 28 January 2012 billed as the rally to launch Vladimir Putin’s presidential campaign.

The day’s small and relatively lacklustre turnout was seen as indicative of a tougher than expected campaign season for Mr Putin, whose platform of political and economic stability was starting to lose its appeal – even in Russia’s heartland.
