Why were so many people in Alsace apparently voting for the Front National in the 2017 Presidential Election in France? The enforced incorporation of Alsace into the new region of Grand Est in 2014 caused a revival of the Alsatian identity and made the Alsatian autonomist party the third political force in Alsace. However, in recent regional elections the far right Front National scored above 30% in both Alsatian départements. Author looks for an explanation for this apparent contradiction. |
