This publication shows the distribution of R&D expenditure and of R&D personnel in the economic sectors in Europe. The lion's share of R&D expenditure can be attributed to the manufacturing industries (81% of the total), with very R&D intensive sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry. Much less R&D was carried out in the service sector (17% of the total), whereas computer and related services were particularly research intensive. The intensities in R&D personnel often correlate with the quota for R&D expenditure. |
