Red tape crusade focuses on Europe

The 'Better Regulation Taskforce', Britain's red tape watchdog, launched an investigation on 2 October 2003 into whether the European Commission is doing enough to prevent unnecessary business legislation. A report is due to be published early in 2004.

In February 2003 the European Commission adopted a Communication setting out to simplify EU legislation. This was the latest stage in the Commission's Better Regulation initiative, a key part of the objective set at the Lisbon summit in 2000 of making the EU the world's most competitive knowledge-based economy by 2010.
