Summary:Regulation (EU) 2023/2124 - adopted by the co-legislators on 4 October 2023 - concerning certain provisions for fishing in the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Agreement area. This was a recast of a previous legal act. Further information:The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is a Regional Fisheries Management Organisation established under Article XIV of the FAO Constitution. Its main objectives are to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources and the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and connecting waters. This Regulation lays down the rules for the application by the European Union (EU) of the conservation, management, exploitation, monitoring, marketing and enforcement measures for fishery and aquaculture products established by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). The recast aims at implementing into EU law the fisheries conservation and management measures adopted in 2018 and 2019 by the GFCM. The previous implementation of measures was enacted by Regulation (EU) 2019/982, which has been substantially amended since adoption. The recast was in the interest of clarity, simplification and legal certainty. The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 30 July 2021. The European Parliament's relevant committee adopted a negotiating position on 25 April 2022. Following an informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text for this file, the European Parliament adopted the final version of the text on 12 July 2023, followed by the Council of the European Union on 18 September. The Act was formally signed by the co-legislators on 4 October 2023 and published in the Official Journal on 12 October 2023. |
