Commission President Jacques Santer's commitment to creating a fearlessly independent anti-fraud office is not in doubt, and what better person to head the new OLAF than his own spokeswoman Martine Reicherts?

She is being tipped to move to the new office at the end of this year when her political master's term of office runs out.

Reicherts certainly has gained a great deal of experience in the past few months defending the Commission's record on fraud - but could that have compromised her ability to get to the bottom of future embarrassing outbreaks of fiddling the books?
