On the 22 July 1998, the European Commission published a fact sheet which sums up the relations between the European Union and Chile in different areas such as Political Cooperation, Trade.

In 1995 the European Union (EU) approved a two phased strategy with Chile which first foresaw the conclusion of a framework agreement on trade and co-operation, in order to prepare for a second step through the political and economic association agreement between the parties.
The Framework Co-operation Agreement between the EU and Chile, as the first step was signed in the margin of the European Council of Florence in June 1996 and covered political dialogue, trade and economic matters, co-operation and other matters of mutual interest with the objective of forging closer relations between the parties and their respective institutions.

In Trade matters, the EU is Chile's main trading partner. Between 1992 and 1996, exports by the EU to Chile rose considerably more than imports from Chile (75% versus 22% respectively), partly due to a slow-down of economic activity in Europe but also to the considerable growth and opening to trade observed in Chile. However, the trade balance remained negative for the EU during the entire period 1992-1996.
