Summary:

Report published by the European Commission in May 2018 concerning the implementation of Council Directive 91/676/EEC - also known as the Nitrates Directive.

Further information:

Council Directive 91/676/EEC aims to reduce water pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources and to prevent further such pollution. The Nitrates Directive forms an integral part of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and is one of the key instruments in the protection of waters against agricultural pressures.

This report - mainly based on the information submitted by Member States for the period 2012-2015 - is accompanied by a Staff Working Document which includes maps and tables on indicators of nutrient pressures from agricultural sources, water quality and designated nitrate vulnerable zones, both at EU level and at Member State level. This was the third time that 27 Member States submitted a report under Article 10 of the Nitrates Directive. A comparison with previous reporting periods thus became possible for 27 Member States.
