Summary: The 1994 report on the demographic situation provided a detailed description of the situation in the European Union and analysed its origins. The Commission's intention was thus to present a general reference framework relating to the main aspects of European population trends. This second report continues this approach by taking a look at the medium and long-term perspectives. It is, however, more selective, in that the emphasis is on providing a first Community study focusing on the dominant factor in our demographic future: the extent and acceleration of the ageing process. |
