Commentary feature by Anatol Lieven, a professor in the War Studies Department of King’s College London and a senior fellow of the New America Foundation.

He starts his article: 'The bloody conflict over South Ossetia will have been good for something at least if it teaches two lessons. The first is that Georgia will never now get South Ossetia and Abkhazia back. The second is for the west: it is not to make promises that it neither can, nor will, fulfil when push comes to shove'.

See further commentary articles on the Russia-Georgia conflict, August 2008 published in the Financial Times on the 13 August by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (Why Russia’s response to Georgia was right) and Joseph Biden, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee (Russia has the most to lose in this costly conflict).
