Further information: The resignation was announced amid tensions with PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, who cannot prime minister because of a suspended jail sentence he received for rigging a referendum. The party met on 16 January to nominate MEP Viorica Dăncilă as the name for new Prime Minister, which was subsequently endorsed by Romania's President Klaus Iohannis on the following day. If ultimately approved by the Parliament, Ms Dăncilă would become the country's first ever female head of government.
