Abstract:

It is perhaps indicative of the voracious appetite for lawmaking of the Community Institutions that this updated ninth edition follows its predecessor after an interval of only two years. Even then readers are urged to consult the companion web site www.oup.com/uk/booksites/law for further updates.

The work offers a clear and accessible collection of the key EU treaties and legislation that students need to study in detail, and with no additional author commentary, the collection is ideal for use as a reference book in exams. New to this edition are extracts from the European Constitution relating to the nature and extent of the Union’s lawmaking powers, the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice, its High Court, and the specialised courts, and the new role for national Parliaments in the policing of the principle of subsidiarity. Reorganised chapters on the free movement of workers, the right of establishment, and the freedom to provide services, and a new chapter on the right of EU citizens and their family members to move and reside freely within the territory of the Member States, are other new features. Changes in competition law and extracts from the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002, changes in civil procedure rules, are further changes in this edition.

The work will be useful to those learning the law and those seeking to apply it.

Derek Wyatt QC is Professor of Law at the University of Oxford.
