Thousands of young Russians marked the Russia Day holiday on the 12 June 2017 by protesting against government corruption and to exert pressure on President Vladimir Putin. Russia Day commemorates the establishment of the Russian sovereign state in 1990, a year prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Protests took place in Moscow, St Petersburg and in other Russian cities.

While in some cities rallies had been sanctioned by the authorities, there were reports of numerous arrests in Moscow and St Petersburg. In Moscow, opposition leader and aspiring presidential candidate Alexei Navalny, called for the rally to take place in a more central and prominent location than that sanctioned. In consequence he was detained by police outside his Moscow home before the rally, charged for repeatedly violating the law on staging rallies and sentenced to thirty days imprisonment.

The rallies were the latest in a series of protests against corruption in Russia.

The EU responded by protesting that the actions of the Russian authorities 'threatens the fundamental freedoms of expression, association and assembly in the Russian Federation. These fundamental rights are enshrined in the Russian constitution and we expect them to be protected, not eroded'.
