Oleg Kashin, a journalist with the leading Russian newspaper Kommersant was beaten by unknown assailants in an attack on the 5 November 2010 that left him with a fractured skull, fractured legs, a broken jaw and broken fingers.

The Kremlin has faced criticism over its inability to bring to justice any of the attackers on reporters in recent years. The authorities have failed to solve any of the 19 murders of journalists in Russia since 2000, including the killing of Ms Politkovskaya, a crusading human rights journalist.

A second journalist Anatoliy Adamchuk, from the Zhukovskiye Vesti suburban Moscow weekly, was also attacked two days later.
