Russian president visits Turkey and seals reconciliation

Russia's president visited Turkey and met with his counterpart on 10 October 2016. In a sign of rapprochement between the two countries, an agreement was signed on the Turkish Stream, a project to build an undersea pipeline to get Russian gas to Turkey and then onto Europe.

The project would allow Russia to strengthen its position in the European gas market and cut energy supplies via Ukraine, the main route for Russian energy into Europe.

Discussions were also held aiming to increase economic cooperation between Russia and Turkey, including a potential free trade agreement.
