Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, called for tighter regulation of the internet on the 24 May 2011 as the world’s most powerful web figures gathered in Paris to debate governance ahead of a summit of leaders from the Group of Eight industrialised nations.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Niklas Zennstrom of Skype and Eric Schmidt of Google were among the web entrepreneurs in Paris for a two-day conference on the future of the internet. The summit’s conclusions were presented at the G8 meeting in the Normandy town of Deauville, 26-27 May 2011.
