France’s main opposition Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party edged closer to bankruptcy in 2013 after France’s top court, the Constitutional Council, confirmed on the 4 July 2013 that presidential nominee Nicolas Sarkozy had exceeded spending limits in the presidential election in 2012 and would not be receiving €11m in state subsidies. Mr Sarkozy resigned from the Council in protest at the move on the 4 July 2013. As a former French president he had automatically became a member of the constitutional body after his failure in the election in May 2012. |
