The turmoil in the global banking industry claimed another high-profile German victim on 14 April 2008 when Georg Milbradt, conservative premier of the eastern German state of Saxony resigned over his handling of Sachsen LB, the German bank hit by the subprime investment crisis.

His move comes a week after the resignation of Ingrid Matthäus-Maier, chief executive of the state-owned KfW development bank. KfW is the largest shareholder in IKB, another German bank hit by the subprime turmoil, and Ms Matthäus-Maier had been criticised for her handling of the problems at IKB.
