Sweden topped the EU league with 55.2&percent; of national wealth taken in tax and welfare payments in 1996, Denmark followed at 52.0&percent;, with Finland on 48.8&percent;. Belgium came fourth with a tax burden of 47.0&percent; of gross national product. Ireland is the least taxed EU country, with only 34.5&percent; of national wealth entering the state's coffers.
