Anne Glover, Professor of molecular and cell biology at Aberdeen University, who has been Scotland’s chief scientific adviser since 2006, has been appointed in December 2011 to be the European Union's first Chief Scientist.

This fulfilled a pledge made in 2009 by José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President, to raise the profile of science in Brussels.
