The trial of the former Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, began at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague on 12 February 2002. Mr Milosevic is charged with genocide in the 1992-95 Bosnian war, crimes against humanity in Croatia in 1991-2 and in Kosovo in 1999, breaches of the Geneva Convention and other war crimes. Most legal experts agree that central to the case is whether or not Mr Milosevic knew the atrocities were happening. The trial is expected to last at least two years.
