The (UK) Food Standards Agency (FSA) said on 13 June 2002 that sheep's intestines should no longer be used for sausage skins in order to reduce the theoretical risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in sheep. The FSA will now propose the ban to the European Commission for Europe-wide implementation. Within the sausage industry there are fears that such a ban would give rise to concerns among European consumers about the safety of British lamb.
