EUObserver published on 7 July 2015 a feature concerning the role of the shipping industry in the migration crisis hit the Mediterran region.

According to Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, one in five migrants floating on the sea were being saved by merchant vessels. While taking part in the operation was seen as a moral and legal obligation for big European ships, the association's CEO defended a need for stepping up the resources of the EU's Triton operation.
