The countries signing the EuroHPC declaration recognised that there is an urgent need for them and for the Union to invest together in order to: acquire and offer to Europe's scientific and industrial users a leading-edge HPC infrastructure matching their demanding application requirements; and develop in Europe an own world-class exascale HPC infrastructure by 2022-2023.

Background information:

The term 'High Performance Computing' refers to the technologies and the use of powerful supercomputers (interconnecting in a single system or in close proximity of hundreds of thousands or millions of computing units working in parallel) to perform massive and fast computations that are so demanding that they cannot be performed using general-purpose computers.

The Declaration was signed at the Digital Day in Rome (organised on 23 March 2017 as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Treaty of Rome).

Signing by a number of Member States on 23 March 2017 of the EuroHPC Declaration, aiming to support a new generation of computing and data infrasttuctures.
