Date: 30/10/03 COUNTRIES neighbouring the European Union face “critical”.levels of youth unemployment and increasing skill gaps, says the director of the Turin-based EU agency, the European Training Foundation. Speaking in Brussels on Tuesday (28 October), Peter de Rooij said there was currently a “mismatch”.between employees' existing skills and those required by employers. A report due to be published by the Foundation next month shows that changes in the population growth will have major implications for the EU labour force, especially in Mediterranean countries. Since 1990, the population in this region has grown by 24% to 167.2 million and one in every three young people is unemployed. The Foundation hosts a conference on vocational education and training next Wednesday (5 November).
