Pity Dutch Secretary of State Michiel Patijn, who succumbed to the pressure at last week's EU-Cyprus Association Council.

Only hours earlier, proposals to allow Turkish Cypriots into EU accession negotiations alongside the island's internationally recognised government had caused a headline-grabbing rift between Greece and its partners, and the cancellation of the day's structured dialogue between Cyprus and the Union.

Blissfully unaware, Patijn read out a pre-prepared speech during the Association Council, finishing with the words: “We now proceed to the structured dialogue.” Met by a stunned silence, he realised something was wrong, then twigged.

“Oh, I wasn't meant to say that,” he apologised.
