Further information:

Miro Cerar's resignation on 14 March 2018 came after the Supreme Court's decision to annul the result of a September referendum that approved a 1-billion-euro railway project. The government planned to build a 27-kilometer (16.7-mile) railway line between the Italian border city of Divaca and the state-owned Adriatic seaport Luka Koper.

Cerar's resignation came three months ahead of the Slovenian general election expected in June 2018.

Once Cerar's resignation is formally acknowledged, a 30-day window for the election of a new prime minister-designate opens. If a new prime minister is not appointed in this time, the president dissolves parliament and calls an early election to be held within 40 days at the earliest and two months at the latest.

On 14 March 2018 Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar announced his resignation.
