Book abstract:

This work provides an annual review of social policy which is different in style and approach to the treatment usually given to social policy issues elsewhere in the media. It is recognised as a topical, accessible, well-written and affordable publication.
The book is divided into three parts following an introduction giving an overview of the year in social policy. Part one concentrates on UK social policy and examines the development of community care vis-รก-vis institutional social care, the invest and reform policies of the Treasury, efficacy of PSAs and the issue of 'choice' within the NHS. Part two turns to the international scene with four chapters featuring globalisation, convergence in social welfare systems, analysis of the health transition, welfare reform in the United States and social policy in the East Asian tiger economies. Pensions and old age are the main themes of the four chapters comprising part three.
The work will interest academics, students, researchers and policy makers engaged in the fields of political and social sciences.
