Social protection of the next generation in Europe:
The book reproduces the papers from a conference called 'Social Protection of the Next Generation in Europe' organised by the European Institute for Social Security in 1997. The papers focus on the social security systems of tomorrow. The twentieth century has witnessed the birth of the welfare state but changes in the structure of our society have led some people to question how well it will survive in the new millennium. These structural changes include the demographic trend towards increased life expectancy which is combined with decreased fertility, the battle between the individualism of the free market and the traditional solidarity structures of the welfare state, and the pressures that will be placed upon the children of tomorrow to integrate into a changing labour market.

The papers in this volume address these problems on an individual, national and supra-national level. The contributors also advance solutions to these potential problems, solutions that aim to improve efficiency, stimulate economic growth, distribute income efficiency, reduce poverty and prevent social exclusion. There is also a special section about the evolution of social protection in Estonia, which highlights some of the additional social and political problems faced by Eastern European states as they attempt to tackle the same pressing obstacles that face the West.
