Date: 19/11/1998 Economics Commissioner Yves-Thibault de Silguy managed to get his message across on his recent visit to China - but it was far from easy. The Chinese interpreters preferred to work from English into their native tongue, so while the Commissioner spoke in French, they translated from pre-written English language texts. On one occasion, the relay system broke down, so the Commissioner split his speech into smaller sound-bite chunks while the interpreters continued to work from the English version. But there was a snag - nobody knew whether the interpreters were translating the words which the Commissioner had just delivered, or were miles ahead or streets behind. “It was all a bit of a gamble. We couldn't be sure quite what we were hearing,” said one official afterwards. |
