Article looks at the fate of those often poor and elderly Spanish people whose savings are threatened by the financial problems hitting the savings bank movement in Spain.

A condition of a €100bn bank rescue agreed by Madrid with the EU in July 2012 was that these products would be forced to bear losses, meaning clients who bought them from the four nationalised savings banks – Bankia, Nova Caixa Galicia, CataloniaCaixa, and Banco de Valencia – could lose all their money.
