Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea may have been forced to resign from his country's top job in April, but he certainly does not seem to have lost the common touch.

At 5pm on 15 June a European Voice journalist had an appointment to interview the central European politician.

However, at around 11am on the day in question, the scribe received a somewhat sheepish call from the Ciorbea camp.

“Would it be possible to change the meeting to 4.30?” asked an aide for the great man. “It is just that Mr Ciorbea would like to watch the Romania-Columbia World Cup football match.”

Given the fact that Romania went on to win the game 1-0, the ex-premier appears to have made an eminently sensible decision.
