Reports of the election in the Berlin State held on the 18 September 2016. Exit polls suggested that Social Democratic Party (SPD) had secured nearly 22% of the vote, enough to give them a mandate to govern, although necessarily in coalition with another party or parties. Previous coalition partner, the CDU, came second with 17.6%, a drop of over 5%. This time it was expected that the coalition would be between the SPD, the Greens and The Left party. The Greens came in third with 16.4% of the vote. The Left Party witnessed a 4.5% gain from the 2011 elections with 16.2%. The populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with its anti-refugee and eurosceptic message won about 14% of the vote and would enter the parliament for the first time. |
