President Jean-Claude Juncker delivered his first State of the Union speech to the European Parliament on the 9 September 2015, deliberating on the big challenges Europe was facing and presenting the progress in implementing the European Commission's ten priorities. He set out his political vision for the future of the EU that would guide the preparation of the Commission's Work Programme for 2016 and beyond.
The State of the Union would launch consultations with the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on the Commission work programme. It was an important element in the structured dialogue between the institutions.
