Statement by Commission C. Patten on elections in Peru

On the 10 April 2001, for the European Union, electoral bodies and the main actors have made a remarkable effort in Peru for the General Election whitch took place on the 08 April 2001, particularly in view of the short time available since the last elections.

On Behalf of the European Union, the European Commissionner Chris Patten wished to congratulate the people of Peru, the political parties and the electoral authorities for the maturity shown with a normal and peaceful electoral process, after the difficult period Peru had to go through during the last year. He also would like to encourage the Peruvian people, the electoral authorities and politicians actors to continue their democratic efforts throughout the electoral process leading to the second round of Presidential elections and the transition to a new Government and Parliament on July 2002.
