Egypt's military deposed the country's first democratically-elected President, Mohammed Morsi on the 3 July 2013. It said that an interim government would be put in place and the constitution suspended. The move prompted mixed reactions around the world. One relatively unanimous message was a call to all sides in Egypt to remain calm and refrain from violence. The European Union said that it hoped for prompt elections in Egypt, a return to democratic rule, and the introduction of an inclusive new administration representing as broad a majority of the country as possible. |
