Statement by the spokesperson on the recent developments in Venezuela

On the 31 March 2017 the recent rulings of the Supreme Court of Venezuela called into question the constitutional powers of the National Assembly and the restriction of the parliamentary immunity of its members.

The European Union stresses that full respect of the Constitution and the rule of law and separation of powers is crucial for Venezuela. The spokesperson of the high representative stated that the government must work together with all national actors and institutions within the constitutional framework, and in full respect of fundamental freedoms, to address the many challenges the country is facing.
