Article reports that early signs of an economic recovery risked luring German voters into thinking the crisis was over, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Social Democratic contender for the chancellery, said on the 11 August 2009, warning that the country still faced the prospect of mass unemployment.

Mr Steinmeier was also reported as saying that the United Kingdom government should resist City of London pressure to oppose tougher regulations of international financial markets.

The remarks were made in the context of Mr Steinmeier leading the SPD in the september 2009 Federal elections in Germany.
