Further information: Hungary, in particular the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is conducting a campaign called 'Stop Soros' against immigration and the Hungarian-American businessman George Soros, who founded the Central European University and supports migrants. The topic of immigration is controversial especially ahead of the 8 April election in Hungary: the right wing is trying to gain votes through this anti-immigrant plan. Soros was accused of supporting illegal immigrations together with some NGOs and Hungarian government intends to ban Soros from the country. Background information: Actually, this campaign started at the beginning of 2017 and it became stronger when the Hungarian government approved strict regulations on foreign-funded NGOs on 13 June 2017. Because of the approval of this law and of the refusal to comply with refugee quotas, Hungary is facing legal actions from the European Commission: Hungary's anti-immigration bill is considered a breach of human rights. |
