The present report, "Study on the longer-term impact of European Union funding of research in the field of environment and health", highlights the main achievements of research projects funded by the European Union (EU) during framework programme 5, 6 and 7 (first three calls). It also evaluated the contribution of EU-funded research to the implementation of the European Environment and Health Action Plan (EHAP) 2004-2010.

Carried out by an independent consultant, COWI, the study shows many positive impacts of EU funding of environment and health research: FP has stimulated research and other activities at national level, and has contributed to restructuring, integration and networking within many sub-areas of environment and health to build a European Research Area. However, the study identified important issues such as integrated environment and health risk assessment, indoor air quality, human biomonitoring, and changing climate, for which further research efforts are required to provide better scientific support for preventing major environment-related diseases such as cancer, asthma, and allergies.
