Swedish prime minister Göran Persson, as chair of the rotating EU presidency, warned in June 2001 against the UK Conservative Party's proposals for the European Union, leading up to the general election. The party said during the campaign they would use the European Council summit taking place by then to demand significant changes to the EU's Nice treaty.
