The UK government published on the 23 August 2018 the first in a series of technical notices designed to prepare the UK for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit. Seventy separate 'technical notices' were subsequently published between August and October 2018. The notices included advice for businesses, citizens and public bodies. The UK Government considered that a no-deal Brexit scenario 'remains unlikely' but believed it should 'prepare for all eventualities' until the outcome of the negotiations with the EU was known. A ‘no deal’ Brexit would mean that the UK left the EU on the 29 March 2019 and become a third country without a formal agreement in place between the UK and the EU. One of the guidance issued on the 12 October 2018 covered fishing issues: + Commercial fishing if there’s no Brexit deal. Background information The United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs issued an Open Consultation White Paper Sustainable Fisheries for Future Generation on the 4 July 2018. DEFRA claimed that this set out a blueprint for sustainable and profitable fishing industry in the United Kingdom. Outside the EU, the UK would be an independent coastal state and would regain control of UK waters and natural resources, as well as the flexibility to negotiate with other countries and ensure stocks were fished sustainably. A new Fisheries Bill would be introduced in the current parliamentary session (2017-2019) |
