Summary:Report published by the European Commission on 14 February 2024 detailing the competitive strengths and challenges of the European Union's (EU) Single Market. This is the first annual Single Market and Competitiveness Report. Further information:The EU's Single Market is one of the world's largest integrated market areas, and it is at the core of the European Union's competitiveness. However, a succession of crises has highlighted the importance of strengthening its resilience. In 2023, a Communication marking the thirty years since the establishment of the EU's Single Market discussed the way forward on how it could be further deepened to harness its full potential. In parallel, a Communication on long-term competitiveness provided an overview of the challenges and assessed them through the lens of nine competitiveness drivers. This report provides an analysis of the Single Market and its competitiveness, structured along these nine drivers and the related key performance indicators (KPIs). It also identifies future priorities and recommends actions where appropriate. This is the European Commission's contribution to the first annual cycle of interinstitutional discussion on progress and measures regarding the future of the Single Market and competitiveness. The Communication was adopted by the European Commission on 14 February 2024 and it builds on a previous annual Single Market Report published by the Commission since 2021. It was published alongside two Staff Working Documents comprising, among others, the first annual report on key findings from the European Monitor of Industrial Ecosystems (EMI). |
