which has authorised aid to the sector totalling 4.79 billion ecu for 1998. The plan foresees a progressive reduction in state aid and a steady decline in coal production from 47 million tonnes in 1997 to 37 million tonnes in 2002. The aid will be used to contribute towards operating costs, a scheme for underground mineworkers, and support for mining companies Sophia Jacoba, RAG Aktiengesellschaft, Saarbergwerke and Preussag Anthrazit.
