The position of doyen in the EU's Committee of permanent representatives (Coreper) is up for grabs following the decision of Belgian ambassador to the EU Philippe de Schoutheete to stand down on 1 November after ten years. A diplomat of the old school, the French-speaking De Schoutheete will be replaced by Frans van Daele from the Flemish community.

The two leading contenders for the 'doyen' mantle are Luxembourg ambassador Jean-Jacques Kasel and France's Pierre de Boissieu, both long-serving and refreshingly outspoken members of the Union's most influential back-room committee.
