The Commission has agreed a new strategy to help some of the world’s poorest people who depend on fisheries for their living.

The approach aims to ensure that the EU's policies improve living conditions for communities which depend on fishing and ensure that fish stocks are not depleted irresponsibly. The plan is designed to fend off fierce criticism from development campaign groups' that the Union's fisheries policies encourage EU industry to exploit fishing stocks in developing countries at the expense of local people.
