The Commission has presented member states with new recommendations on which animals’ remains suspected of transmitting BSE to remove from the food chain

In a proposal to be discussed by EU veterinary officials in the next few weeks, the Commission argues that member states should remove and destroy specific animal parts depending on the level of BSE incidence in each country. The UK and Portugal, which have relatively high rates of the disease, would have to eliminate the longest list of remains from the food chain, while countries with fewer problems would have a shorter list of banned materials.
