The system is designed to clamp down on transit fraud, which arises when huge cargoes of cigarettes and alcohol cross borders illegally without payment of excise duties. The new system will be implemented from the end of next month in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
